On March 14, 2019, an investiture ceremony was held at Rideau Hall by Governor General Julie Payette who invested Dr. Juha-Pekka Kalervo Sinervo, Ph.D., together with 40 other outstanding individuals into the Order of Canada. Pekka is the fourth Finnish-Canadian who have been named to the Order of Canada and received this honour.

Pekka Sinervo is a renowned leader in particle physics. Professor and former dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto, and former senior vice-president of research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, he has furthered our understanding of the basic building blocks of the universe. Notably, he was instrumental in the discovery of the top quark and the Higgs boson particle. An active volunteer in the Jewish community, he is president of the Canadian Council for Reform Judaism.

The Order of Canada is one of our country’s highest civilian honours. Created in 1967, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Let’s all join in congratulating Pekka for his achievements and this very prestigious honour.
