Congratulations to Marja Hillis, winner of the 2014 Osuuspankki “Finnish-Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year award”!
In June 2014, at the CFCC’s AGM, we announced the recipient of this year’s award, which is now in its eighth year. The Finnish-Canadian Entrepreneur of the Year Award is the result of the Finnish Credit Union – Osuuspankki – wanting to recognize the many successful Finnish Canadian entrepreneurs.
Marja Hillis is the Chief Executive Officer of MOLOK North America. Recently she was recognized by Profit magazine and Chatelaine as one of the top female entrepreneurs of 2013.
Marja came to Canada 16 years ago and established Molok North America to market her father’s, Veikko Salli’s, invention of a waste management system which had already become popular in Europe. Although the Molok Deep Collection waste management system was a proven product in Europe she faced a number of challenges in Canada not the least among them was resistance from waste haulers and an industry which was 99% male dominated. Her determination and perseverance – the famous Finnish sisu – overcame adversity. After an initial breakthrough with Ontario Parks Association the system and her continuing efforts the system is now being ever more widely accepted.
In 2013 Profit magazine also recognized the Molok company in its list of the top 500 companies in Canada.
The company has spent the past 15 years building a name for itself in the waste management industry. The revolutionary design allows waste to be stored below grade, reducing offensive odours and prevent vandalism and vermin with its attractive and practical design. The new facility allows the company to consolidate its operations and allows for future growth.
